TB Education and Training Resource Guide—WHAT IS NPIN? (Printable Version)

Return to Table of Contents

The CDC National Prevention Information Network (NPIN) is the nation's reference, referral, and distribution service for information on HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and TB, sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NPIN services are designed to facilitate the sharing of information and resources among people working in HIV, STD, and TB prevention, treatment, and support services.

In addition to developing the Tuberculosis Education and Training Resource Guide, NPIN offers a variety of other services described below. Visit our Website at www.cdcnpin.org to access these services.

Comprehensive Reference and Referral Services staffed with English- and Spanish-speaking health information specialists can link you to information and educational materials, refer you to organizations, and help you find information about funding and other topics. Specialists take calls Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST. All calls are confidential.

Publication Distribution Services provide fact sheets, guidelines, and reports on HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB. Many materials are available in Spanish. Selected materials are also available through NPIN FAX, a fax-on-demand service that you can access through NPIN's toll-free number.

Internet Services include a Website that offers searchable databases, full-text publications, and links to related sites; a mailing list that sends subscribers abstracts of articles from scientific journals and the lay press; and an online "library" that allows you to download fact sheets, articles, and resource guides on HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB.

  • Online Databases link you to information and services related to HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB. You can search for resources and services nationwide, locate educational materials, find out about funding opportunities, learn about conference opportunities, and read about the latest in prevention news. The information in our databases is made available as a public service; neither CDC nor NPIN recommends or endorses the materials and/or services represented.
  • Educational Materials Database is a unique collection of information about hard-to-find educational materials tailored to a variety of audiences and focusing on the prevention of HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB. The database contains bibliographic descriptions, abstracts, and availability information for more than 16,000 items in a wide variety of formats. Materials in over 34 different languages are included.
  • Resources and Services Database contains descriptions of more than 19,000 national, state, and local organizations that provide services related to HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB. Services include case management, counseling and testing, prevention, education and outreach, health care, support services, housing assistance, and legal counseling. The database also contains groups that provide services in languages other than English and groups that target their services to specific audiences (youth, women, etc).
  • Funding Database includes private and government funding opportunities for community-based and HIV/AIDS, STD, and TB service organizations. Included are details about specific target audiences, eligibility requirements, geographic location, application processes, and deadlines.
  • Prevention News Update Database contains over 26,000 abstracts of articles about HIV/AIDS-, STD-, and TB-related events in the news; trends in these epidemics; and research findings from major newspapers, wire services, medical journals, and news magazines.
  • Conference Calendar Database contains information about conferences, seminars, and many other gatherings of professionals working in HIV/AIDS, STD, and TB prevention, treatment, and support services.

Resource and Training Centers provide professional research services and maintain NPIN's extensive collection of education materials, journals, and newsletters on HIV/AIDS, STDs, and TB. Onsite technical assistance and training for NPIN Website and Internet searching is also available for individuals or small groups by appointment.
