The Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines 2006 update the edition released in 2002 (MMWR Recommendations and Reports May 10, 2002 / 51(RR06);1-80.
Although these guidelines emphasize treatment, prevention strategies and diagnostic recommendations also are discussed.

These guidelines provide a resource to assist in the design, implementation, and evaluation of STD prevention and control programs. The target audience for these guidelines is public health personnel and other persons involved in managing STD prevention programs. The resources include Performance Measures and Companion Guidance, and Program Operations Guidelines for STD Prevention, including Leadership and Program Management, Program Evaluation, Training and Professional Development, Medical and Laboratory Services, Community and Individual Behavior Change Interventions, Partner Services, Outbreak Response Plan, and Areas of Special Emphasis.
