CDC HIV/AIDS Guidelines and Recommendations
HIV/AIDS-related guidelines and recommendations are listed on the CDC's Web Site at www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/guidelines/index.htm. These guidelines are organized into the following categories:
| Community Planning |
Community Planning recommendations and guidelines support the goal of improving the effectiveness of HIV
prevention programs by strengthening the scientific base, community relevance, and population or risk-based focus of prevention interventions. |
| Counseling and Testing |
Use these recommendations and guidelines to develop counseling, testing, and referral (CTR) services and
policies in both traditional clinical settings and nontraditional settings. |
| Evaluation |
Health departments receiving CDC funding for HIV prevention are expected to implement HIV prevention
program evaluation activities. Evaluation recommendations and guidelines describe the evaluation activities, specify the types of data to be collected, and explain the mechanisms for reporting that data to CDC. |
| Non-Occupational
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis
|
These guidelines contain CDC's recommendations regarding the management of non-occupational exposure to HIV and the administration of post-exposure prophylaxis. |
| Occupational
Exposure and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis |
These guidelines contain CDC's recommendations regarding the management of occupational exposure to HIV and the administration of post-exposure prophylaxis. |
| Partner Services |
These guidelines include recommendations for partner services programs for HIV infection, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydial infection. |
| Patient Care |
Patient Care recommendations and guidelines include resources for caring for those with HIV or AIDS in both the
clinical setting or at home. |
| Prevention |
HIV prevention requires a comprehensive strategy that pairs service delivery systems with effective, sustained
health education and health promotion interventions. These recommendations, guidelines, bulletins, and guidances are
written to encourage HIV/STD prevention providers to develop programs and services based on health education and health promotion strategies.
|
| Security, Confidentiality, and Content |
These recommendations include guidelines for content of AIDS-related written materials, HIPAA privacy rule and public health guidance, and technical guidance for HIV/AIDS surveillance programs.
|
| Surveillance |
Surveillance enhances efforts to prevent HIV transmission, improve allocation of resources for treatment services, and assist in evaluating the impact of public health interventions. Surveillance recommendations and guidelines provide the current case definition for HIV infection in adults and children, recommended program practices, and performance and security standards for conducting HIV/AIDS surveillance. |
| Treatment |
Treatment recommendations and guidelines include the Adults and Adolescents Treatment Guidelines, as well as guidelines on other topics, such as the clinical care of women with HIV, the treatment of children with HIV, interventions to prevent perinatal transmission, the treatment and prevention of opportunistic infections, and the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. |
