Sexually Transmitted Infections on the Rise in Windsor
Abstract
Canada’s city of Windsor, Ontario, has experienced an increase in reported cases of both chlamydia and gonorrhea throughout the past year, according to Dr. Allen Heimann, the city’s medical officer. The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit recorded 901 chlamydia cases between January and November of 2012, in comparison with 877 cases in 2011. The health unit recorded an increase in gonorrhea cases as well, with 84 cases reported in 2012 in comparison with 50 cases the previous year. Heimann postulates that the increase is due to an increase in sexual activity both in number of encounters and partners. He sees behavior trending back toward unsafe sex as there seems to be lessening concern about the consequences of STIs due to the success in treating HIV. However, Heimann warns that all STIs are serious and the best prevention is to use condoms.
