In a move to further advance efforts to eradicate HIV/AIDS, Brazilian health officials have announced that doctors will now be required to notify authorities of every HIV case in the country. Previously, health care providers were only required to notify state and federal officials when patients developed AIDS. All patients diagnosed with AIDS are eligible to receive free drug treatment, a program that currently treats 223,000 individuals and costs the nation approximately $700 million per year. Health officials estimate there may be another 250,000 individuals infected with HIV, but they do not know for sure since they have not tracked HIV cases until now. Approximately 241,500 individuals died of AIDS in Brazil from 1980 to 2010.
