Hong Kong's New Cases of HIV in 2011 Hits New High

Abstract
The Hong Kong Health Department announced on September 20 that HIV/AIDS continues to be a major threat to public health. According to the health department, Hong Kong has reached a high in new cases of HIV infection for 2011, as there were 438 cases in 2011. That is an increase of 12.6% from the previous year. According to the data, the cumulative total of HIV infections in Hong Kong reached 5,523 by the end of June 2012. Hong Kong's government continues to promote provider-initiated HIV antibody testing services and assistance to AIDS service organizations for providing free testing and counseling. New measures have also been initiated to curb the epidemic, such as the Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission Program, the Methadone Treatment Program, and community-based strategies for stopping the spread of HIV among men who have sex with men.
