State: Third Hays Patient Tests Positive for Hep C

Abstract
A third former patient of Hays Medical Center has tested positive for the strain of hepatitis C virus linked to a cluster of cases in New Hampshire. David Kwiatkowski, who has denied allegations that he stole drugs while working at a New Hampshire hospital and contaminated syringes later used on patients, worked at Hays’ cardiac catheterization lab from May 24 to Sept. 22, 2010. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said 474 people were potentially exposed to HCV during his employment; 366 have been tested; two positive tests were reported earlier in August; and some former patients are still being tested.
