South Africa Reaches Out to Sex Workers in Anti-AIDS Campaign
Abstract
In line with the national strategy targeting “key populations” who represent the most new HIV infections, South Africa’s anti-AIDS council (SANAC) on Wednesday announced a new outreach to sex workers. These workers are linked to about 19.8 percent of the nation’s new HIV infections, Department of Health data show, and recognizing them in prevention efforts “will have a more profound effect going forward in key populations,” said Fareed Abdullah, SANAC’s CEO. Abdullah was speaking at a two-day symposium for sex workers in Boksburg, near Johannesburg, the South African Press Association reported.
