Spokesperson Gloria Kreps said Tuesday that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has sent letters to some 2,000 patients who may have been exposed to hepatitis C virus by a former radiology technician. The letters went out to all patients who underwent treatment or procedures in the area where David Kwiatkowski worked in 2008, whether he was directly involved in their care or not. After a few weeks in his temporary position, UPMC fired Kwiatkowski, but he proceeded to work at 10 other hospitals during the next four years. He was arrested in July and is accused of a drug-theft scheme that infected at least 31 Exeter Hospital patients with HCV. It is not clear when Kwiatkowski became infected. Allegheny County Department of Health spokesperson Guillermo Cole told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that if any patients test positive for HCV, more testing will be needed to determine whether their strain can be linked to Kwiatkowski.
