Northwest Queensland is seeing a syphilis outbreak, and authorities there are warning the STD could spread further if residents do not get tested. Dr. Arun Menon, a Mount Isa sexual health specialist, said the first signs of infection may seem like a common cold or the flu. The northwest region has seen 147 cases, including two stillbirths. “We’re not saying get tested for everything under the sun, but please get tested for this,” Menon said, adding that most of those affected are heterosexuals ages 15-24. No cases have been seen involving miners or sex workers, he said.
