The Hillsborough County Health Department is advising all sexually active individuals to be on the lookout for symptoms of syphilis, such as sores on the genitals or mouth, after noting an increase in cases of the STD. The county has logged 126 cases of infectious and early latent syphilis so far this year, a 65 percent increase over the same period last year. Ninety-three percent of the cases involve men, many of whom have sex with men. Local health centers are offering free or low-cost testing, diagnosis, and treatment; for more information, telephone the Tampa STD Clinic at 813-307-8064.
