The Virginia Department of Health has announced that those on the state’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program waiting list will be enrolled and receiving their medications by Sept. 30. ADAP had a funding shortfall in November 2010; the department said unprecedented demand for its services was due to factors including unemployment and loss of insurance, new medications, new treatment guidelines, and expanded testing. Karen Remley, Virginia’s health commissioner, said ADAP has since collaborated with care providers, health departments, and partners in the community to facilitate patients’ access to treatment. [PNU editor’s note: According to the National Alliance of State & Territorial AIDS Directors, 579 Virginians were on the ADAP waiting list as of July 12, 2012.]
