Polk Health Officials Report Cluster of Syphilis Cases

Abstract
The Polk County Health Department has confirmed six cases of syphilis in the past six weeks, approximately as many cases as the agency reports in a typical year. Investigators are looking for links among the cases, said Sandra Scholten, a nurse practitioner with the department. “One of the reasons we’re a little concerned is we can’t pin it back to one source,” she said. People who have sex with multiple, anonymous partners are at highest risk of infection, Scholten said. The health department is offering free syphilis tests to county residents who think they may have been exposed to the STD; telephone 515-286-3798. Residents of other counties should contact their local health department.
