President Obama Signs Landmark Cruise Safety Legislation
Abstract
| President Barack Obama on Tuesday signed legislation designed to protect the health and safety of persons on board cruise ships. In addition to mandating upgrades designed to prevent attacks, such as peepholes in stateroom doors, the law provides for improved care of victims. The “Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act” requires that persons reporting a sexual attack be given immediate access to a national sexual assault hotline, forensic examination, and drugs to prevent infection by STDs. The shipboard assault, disappearance or suspicious death of any US national must be reported immediately to the FBI and the Coast Guard. The genesis of the legislation was a letter sent four years ago to Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.) by Laurie Dishman of Sacramento, Calif., who was sexually attacked on a ship. Dishman was present at the White House signing along with Matsui, who introduced the bill more than a year ago. Supporters of the measure include the International Cruise Victims Association and the Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network.
