Rally Supports Sex Education
Abstract
| Kentucky lawmakers are considering legislation that would establish minimum criteria for sex education curriculum in the schools. On Thursday, advocates gathered at the Capitol to show support for the measure.
HB 119 would not require state public schools to teach sex education. However, the legislation would require those that do to offer sex education that is age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, medically accurate, and cover topics beyond abstinence or contraception.
The bill includes the option for parents to withdraw their children from sex education classes.
HB 119 is sponsored by Rep. Mary Lou Marzian (D-Louisville), who expressed amazement that sex education standards are not in place. Marzian decided to back the legislation after her daughter, a public school teacher, told her of the misinformed questions students in a health class were asking. “It terrified me,” said Marzian.
