Zulus to Fight AIDS with Circumcision Abstract King Goodwill Zwelithini on Saturday announced his intention to revive the practice of male circumcision among South Africa’s Zulus. Ritual circumcision was common among Zulus until the early 19th century, when King Shaka ordered it stopped because it took young warriors off the battlefield for too long. Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal province are now in talks with Zwelithini about re-introducing the practice. Numerous studies have shown that properly performed male circumcision reduces the risk of female-to-male HIV transmission by about half.
