Bexar Cases of HIV, AIDS Unchanged Since Last Year
|
|
Abstract
|
| Half the women diagnosed with HIV last year in San Antonio’s home county did not know how they were exposed to the disease, Cara Hausler, a Metropolitan Health District epidemiologist, said on World AIDS Day. Women who believed they were exposed through high-risk heterosexual activity accounted for 28 percent of the total, and women who reported intravenous drug use represented 22 percent, she said.
Among men, the chief routes of transmission were sex with other men (62 percent), high-risk heterosexual contact (1 percent), intravenous drug use (1 percent), and unknown (35 percent).
Statewide, about 63,700 people have AIDS, with 4,000 cases reported in San Antonio’s Bexar County.
The director of the local health department cited early detection as a way to reduce the spread of HIV.
“If a person doesn’t know they have the disease, there’s definitely a risk of spreading it,” said Dr. Fernando Guerra.
Hausler and Guerra provided the statistical update as part of a free HIV screening event at the San Antonio Public Library.
