Activists Decry D.C. AIDS Policies During Protest
Abstract
| On World AIDS Day, a coalition of AIDS activists held a mock funeral procession from the White House to Mayor Adrian M. Fenty’s office to protest the District’s shortage of housing for people with HIV/AIDS. Two members of the group D.C. Fights Back were arrested for refusing a police order to move from the doorway of an office where Fenty’s staff meets. Larry Bryant, co-chair of the group, had vowed not to move until members could meet Fenty to demand the District reduce its three-year waiting period for AIDS housing. Other speakers criticized Fenty for failing to act on a city Department of Health report showing an HIV prevalence of at least 3 percent. They also cited a Washington Post series of investigations showing questionable DOH oversight of federal AIDS housing funds. The city has a major shortage of low-cost and subsidized housing. For people who do not have AIDS, the wait is 10 years.
