AIDS on the Rise in Cuban Youth: Officials

Abstract
In a televised interview Saturday, the deputy director of Havana’s Tropical Medicine Institute warned that Cuba is tracking an increase in HIV cases among young people. Cuba saw more than 1,300 new HIV infections last year; another 1,400 are projected to occur this year; and those most at risk are ages 19 to 24. “This is something that tends to happen more to young people because of the dynamism of youth, not thinking about the future and only about the present,” said Jorge Perez. Cuba, which domestically manufactures generic versions of six AIDS drugs, offers patients free care and treatment.
