Abstract
|
| On Friday, Singapore's Ministry of Health released figures showing new HIV/AIDS cases in 2006 increased 12.6 percent over 2005 figures. Last year's 357 new cases followed the 315 cases registered in 2005 for a second consecutive record high. More than 90 percent of the infections in 2006 were sexually transmitted, two-thirds of them heterosexually, the ministry reported. More than half of those diagnosed in 2006 were already at a late stage of the disease, 'similar to the pattern in previous years,' said the ministry. The government rejects general condom promotion, but it does focus on preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission. Of the 3,060 people ever recorded as having HIV in Singapore, 1,307 show no signs of illness, 705 have AIDS, and 1,048 have died. |
