NYC Knows (The Bronx Knows, Brooklyn Knows)
NYC Knows is a large-scale public health effort to increase voluntary HIV testing so that NYC residents learn their HIV status and have access to quality care and prevention. Launched on National HIV Testing Day in 2008, The Bronx Knows was New York City’s first borough-wide HIV testing initiative and one of the largest HIV testing efforts in the country.
The NYC Department of Health partnered with hospitals, health centers, community-based agencies, faith-based organizations, educational institutions and local businesses to increase voluntary HIV testing so that every Bronx resident would know his or her HIV status and those who tested positive would be linked to quality care and prevention. Far surpassing the goal to conduct 250,000 HIV tests, The Bronx Knows community partners conducted over 607,000 tests during the 3-year initiative.
Following the success of The Bronx Knows, Brooklyn Knows launched on World AIDS Day, 2010. Over the 4-year initiative, community partners will work with the Health Department to help Brooklyn residents know their status.
