This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is intended to encourage collaborations between behavioral and biomedical clinical scientists, epidemiologists, mathematical modelers, and clinical trial design specialists to develop new research strategies and methodologies that will facilitate the design and testing of combination HIV prevention interventions (prevention packages).
The purpose of this FOA is to invite applications for multidisciplinary research programs that address two objectives: (1) to devise optimal HIV prevention packages for specific populations, and (2) to perform feasibility and acceptability studies to demonstrate that the prevention package is acceptable to the target population and the study design proposed is appropriate and feasible. The proposed prevention package must include both biomedical and behavioral interventions and interventions to optimize adherence and minimize disinhibition (risk compensation). It is expected that teams conducting this research will perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing prevention research data germane to the target population chosen. These data can be used to develop a required mathematical model to assess the impact of various combinations of interventions which have been shown to reduce HIV incidence in the same or similar settings. Populations selected may be a specific high-risk group, such as Native Americans in the U.S. or MSM in high incidence settings. Populations that are most affected by the epidemic in a given setting (e.g., adolescents < 16 years old in Sub Saharan Africa) are strongly encouraged. This research will require a team approach with expertise in behavioral and biomedical methods of HIV prevention, epidemiology, mathematical modeling, and clinical trial design and implementation.
Note: This FOA will only support clinical studies which examine the feasibility and acceptability of a combination prevention intervention in a specific population. Applications proposing clinical trials to measure efficacy of a proposed intervention are not sought through this FOA and will not be supported.
