Increased Knowledge and Innovative Strategies to Reduce HIV Incidence–iKnow Projects (R01)

Grant Amount: Unspecified.
The purpose of this FOA is to promote innovative research that addresses one or both of the following objectives:
(1) Devise optimal strategies to improve the identification of persons unaware of their HIV-1 infection and successfully link them to HIV testing, treatment, and prevention interventions; (2) Develop and examine the feasibility and acceptability of novel integrated interventions of biomedical and behavioral strategies that substantially reduce the likelihood of onward HIV transmission in these populations.
The intent of this announcement is to support the development of innovative strategies to identify persons unaware of their HIV infection in specific high-risk populations and settings on an ongoing basis. The populations selected should be documented to be at high risk of HIV infection and have a high proportion that do not know their HIV status. This would include, for example, young African American men who have sex with men in the U.S., and adolescent women in South Africa.
Applications that propose research in the United States are encouraged to propose research with high-risk populations that contain a proportion of persons undiagnosed with HIV-1 that is higher than the national average as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Applications are also encouraged to address research in locales that have not received intensive HIV testing outreach in the past three to five years.
Specific areas of research interest include, but are not limited to:
Social, sexual or drug use network research to characterize groups with individuals that are unaware of their HIV infection; Interventions to increase screening and testing for persons unaware of their HIV infection, including persons with acute HIV infection; Phylogenetic studies to characterize persons unaware of their HIV infection and estimate the basic reproductive number of disease, R0, in specific populations; Mathematical modeling of strategies to reduce HIV incidence in these populations; Clinical studies to determine feasibility and acceptability (up to Phase IIA) of novel interventions in these populations.
